I report as a long term resident of The Grange. I fell and broke my neck on 5th October. My advanced bronchiectasis made me unfit for a general anaesthetic. I was given the time and care for my neck to heal naturally. This has taken place without any lasting problems. I have nothing but praise for everyone who cared for me at The Grange. The consultants did give me their time to explain and discuss things thoroughly. They also kept in touch and regularly considered my case with care. I could not have had treatment which was more suited to my needs. Of course there are staff shortages and one may have to wait, but care was always given with skill, patience and compassion. With proper funding and recruitment The Grange would be a great hospital and realise its full potential in caring for the public.

Kept on a trolley for 36 hours, I was given an Egg mayonnaise sandwich and a pot of what was supposed to be porridge and toast which was inedible. As for the nursing I called for a nurse who took ages to see me and was told they were not qualified enough to help. One time I was shivering and the nurse said are you cold she told me to try and relax, however when I mentioned it to the consultant he said that it would be a reaction to the antibiotics. Some of the nurses were amazing others were not up to the job. Praise must be given to the porters who kept me sane with their cheerfulness. I was not kept up to date with what was going on, it seems that it was too much trouble. My family were not kept up to date with my status. They were given numbers to ring but no response. The reception would leave them on hold for 30 to 40 minutes at a time. When I was able to leave my wife was told to wait at Reception only to be told after an hour that they couldn't get hold of the ward, she had to find the ward and ask for me. Total disorganisation. Wonderful hospital a shame they have no idea how to run it.

Unbelievable NHS care. Saw GP Friday morning with back pain. Was admitted to hospital Friday afternoon and had surgery Monday morning. A very skilful team of surgeons so was able to be discharged just four days later. A three month recovery period now at home.

Firstly I should explain that I have myself been a medical professional for over thirty years, so, with experience comes knowledge and I am well aware of the standards required by governing bodies like the Health Inspectorate Wales and the Care Quality Commission in England. I would also like to think that during my professional career I have always worked to the very best of my ability and have always tried to adhere to the strict standards of care. Sadly it seems that reading many of the reviews concerning our NHS, and especially at the current time due to Covid 19, there appears to be much consternation about the healthcare in this country. Whilst I appreciate that even with the most diligent and professional care, there will be cases that do fall short of certain standards, I feel it is important to convey my own recent experience of our NHS. I was recently admitted to The Grange University Hospital for an ENT procedure. Not only was this my first operation involving a general anaesthetic but it also required an alternative method of anaesthesia due to the nature of the procedure. Although philosophical about the fact that the operation had to be performed, it would be untrue if I did not admit I was extremely nervous. So…I cannot stress enough how wonderful EVERYONE involved in my procedure was. I mean everyone! From the ladies that organised the initial consultations at the Royal Gwent Hospital, to admission at the Grange University Hospital. The kindness and compassion of everyone was outstanding. The truly awful part for me is that you are not always able to remember everyone’s names…which is so sad as they are all part of one GREAT TEAM. I would however like to name a few… My consultant Mr Harris for his absolute professionalism throughout. My anaesthetist and his team for taking the time to listen to my individual needs before during and after my operation. The theatre nurse who held my hand so comfortingly and reassuringly. The recovery nurse who although I’m sure I wasn’t quite coherent was another reassuring voice. The porters who should never be overlooked…their people skills were second to none and we even had a giggle on the way up to theatre. The ward staff…goodness me, they were fantastic, both night and day staff. A huge thank you to Abi, Darcie,Toni and Beth for all your kindness. …and of course who could forget Dawn(House Keeping) and Donna(Hospitality). Ladies…you were amazing! Have you any idea what it’s like to be deprived of a cup of tea…a necessity of course prior to an operation….but “wow!” I was so grateful when I could have one. Just as I ordered…strong…with just a pinch of sugar. The food was great…ordered with thought and care and hot when it arrived. It was an unexpected pleasure to have a single bedded room but let us not loose sight of the most important matters. The room was spotless! “Thank you” Dawn…you have such a happy disposition. I will be thinking of you this weekend….fingers crossed all goes ok for you. Don’t forget no matter what we do we are all just a cog in a big wheel and without all of us working together….the wheel just doesn’t work. This is my recent and truthful experience of the Grange University Hospital. I believe you should give credit where credit is due…so a huge “thank you” to everyone. Wishing you all a “happy, peaceful and above all safe” Christmas and 2022. My grateful thanks Rachel

I was transferred here from the RGH I didn't wait too long before being seen by a triage nurse. I had a wrist injury that was so bad it had to be manipulated then I required surgery. The hospital was very busy so I expected to be waiting a while, there is always someone worse than you. After a few hours the manipulation took place , I was constantly monitored then transferred to a single room in ward A3. The doctors nurses and general staff on the ward were amazing, nothing was too much trouble. I would like to thank each and every one who looked after me during my stay at the Grange

My partner went up the grange to get treatment for her severely painful arm ( after waiting on the phone for 2 hours by the nhs who told her to go up there ) , and when she was seen by a triage nurse was then told to go and wait in her car and wait for a doctor to phone her to maybe go to another hospital. This was 11 o ‘ clock at night mind. She just got in her car and came home.Disgraceful. Totally unacceptable. It’s a hospital for Christ sake. She is still waiting for the phone call.To be honest , she said unless you are at deaths door don’t go there. Bring back the Royal Gwent. At least you would get treatment there no matter how long you had to wait. Sorry!! But speak as I find.Won’t be going back up there in a hurry.Shocking!!

I would give 0 stars if I could . This hospital allowed my father to die. He was clearly deteriorating and nobody could be bothered to ring for help and only 3 hours later when he was in cardiac arrest did they bother to call for help. Unfortunately he couldn’t be saved at this point. Dying, suffering , alone !!! Scary hospital!

Had my pacemaker changed in cardiology dept.well and competently looked afterby staff.Mr campbell (and theatre staff)was excellent in putting me at ease during the procedure. Hannah (technician also efficiently attended to me) and recovery staff also looked after me. There has been bad reports of the grange but i could not fault my outpatient stay there. Thanks to the (Filipino ??)nurse that attended me and put in my cannula--not an easy procedure !!!! All in all thanks.

OMG this was the most disgraceful service from an NHS hospital I have ever received. The A&E waiting room is small and not suitable to the needs of the patients. I sat in a chair for a total of 22 hours in excruciating pain. Could not sleep, still in a chair, due to pain and noise which I can understand but when crying out for help while vomiting only to be blanked was the final straw and I was in the major section for serious injury/illness. General drugs provided which were ok. Thought being moved to the surgical ward would be just that but it turns out to be another word for sitting in a chair in the corridor for the next 4 hours!!! Porters were amazing and respectful and must be "walking" around the clock. One doctor said bloods were ok when another said the white blood count was high. No history of current medication taken and nothing provided. Horror stories and lack of trust everywhere. The biggest disgrace was the call alert fobs where staff get calls from health care professionals and these are always on loud speaker, very loud, with personal and private patient information shared openly without any data protection considered. The boys at the top should stop patting themselves on the back and look at what is really going on.

Attended A and E with my father who had, had a fall and suffered a nasty head wound that was bleeding. No signage telling you where to set down patients who couldn’t walk or that you had a to book in at a small portacabin outside. Waiting room was full. Terrible design, based on something from the 1940’s by the look of it, but whoever designed it has never tried to wheel a wheelchair through a full waiting room to the toilet or into triage. After waiting over 3 hours covered in blood and still not even triaged, with no ventilation and patients sitting knee to knee we left as we could not stomach the sight of two people eating burger and chips in front of us (obviously not an accident or emergency!). There were plenty of staff but there is evidently a problem with the triage system and the booking in system. The young man at the booking desk said he was unable to help move the wheelchair for me or get anyone to help even though I had explained I’d recently had an operation and couldn’t push it as it was too heavy. Conversely, the security guards outside were very helpful and helped me into the waiting room even though I guess it’s not their job. Considering this is supposed to be a new hospital, I’m appalled by the poor design and lack of organisation. I feel the staff are similarly frustrated and I don’t know how they do it.. Someone from management needs to be there to see the chaos especially as we were there long before pub kicking out time when I’m guessing things get much worse. I’ve been in better field hospitals.
